Régua is a working regional centre with more services than Pinhão. The Douro Museum adds context before or after vineyard visits, and the town is useful for onward transfers.
Choose Régua when transport, shops and everyday services matter more than having vineyards immediately around the riverfront. It is also a practical meeting point for a driver or winery transfer.
Porto to Peso da Régua
Direct Douro Line trains from Porto normally take about 1 hour 55 minutes, depending on the service. Check whether your train leaves from São Bento or Campanhã and confirm the return before booking lunch or a tasting.
Driving from Porto usually takes about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes in normal conditions. A car is useful for Lamego and estates outside town, but one person needs to avoid alcohol during winery visits.
A practical half-day in Régua
Start with the Douro Museum, then walk through the centre and riverfront before lunch. Keep the rest of the day for one reserved winery visit or a booked transfer rather than trying to reach several estates.
If you arrive by train, check the real route and gradient before assuming that a nearby winery is walkable. Taxis and transfers are easier to arrange in advance than after a tasting ends.
Régua or Pinhão?
Choose Régua for logistics, town services and the museum. Choose Pinhão for compact scenery and river activities. Visiting both is easy when the day is not overloaded.

Régua suits travellers who want a larger choice of services and useful road and rail connections. Pinhão or a wine estate may suit you better when scenery and a quieter evening matter more.
